Having taken my foundation studies in fine art at West Surrey College of Art and Design, I decided that a break in studies was needed, and I began working in the real world. A brief 37 years later, I moved to Ireland with my husband, recently graduating with a BA in Contemporary Art Practice at the Atlantic Technological University, (formerly Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) ).
It was a weekend course in Mosaic in Suffolk that kindled my interest in the art of mosaic, and I love the feeling of creating a jigsaw puzzle of pieces, with no set picture to follow. Choosing the materials, selecting and cutting the tessera, and adhering and grouting are all elements of a process that lead to a permanent and eye-catching work that can even be displayed outside!
My most recent commission was an outdoor mosaic piece for a charitable community project in Swinford, County Mayo, called the Butterfly Garden.
My enduring love is for the works of JRR Tolkien, and I have completed several mosaics as an homage to the illustrations in the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.
I am a member of the British Association of Modern Mosiac (BAMM) and Visual Artists Ireland (VAI).
